Goodbye, social media! Hello, life!

Dear friends,

I’m taking a huge leap of faith and deleting all social media platforms associated with my work. Without drama or fanfare, without a full understanding or explanation of why, I’m letting go. Some writer friends will call me mad, because I’m abandoning platforms I’ve spent years building. A ton of thought has gone into this decision. I’m not abandoning you or my words.

If you want to keep reading my work or if you’d like to connect with me, you can do so here on my website. If you pre-ordered my novel, I have your information stored and you’ll receive a copy when it’s ready. Thank you for believing in me! While I’m no longer accepting pre-orders, you are welcome to stop by my store to purchase my book, 100 Days of Goodness.

I’m excited to see what will happen in my life when no one is watching, when I’m not obsessively checking in in order to check out. I wonder what impact this will have on my life, relationships, and writing. If I ever return to social media, I truly hope we’ll reconnect there. I wish y’all the very best and hope you’ll check back here to read my words.

Much love, B.

Lipsense: The Review!

My friend, Tiffany, is da bomb. No seriously. She is. Remember that time I taught a theatre camp? She’s the reason I did that. So, when Tiffany fell in love with LipSense, I took notice. She posted on social media about it like she’d met the love of her makeup life.

Now, I get why.

Teadra Mitchell, one of my readers and an all around fun chick, contacted me in August and asked if I’d give Lipsense a try. Remembering Tiffany’s response to it, I immediately said yes. I’m not good with choosing colors, so I left that up to Teadra. The color she sent was perfect. It’s an outstanding red called Fly Girl. Very me.

Out of the Darkness with Tara

Tara and I met five years ago, but we knew one another long before that. We knew one another on a soul level. You know what I mean? People exist in the world who are your soul friends. Eventually, you’ll meet them face to face. The whole time, you’re souls are already connected. Right after I met Tara, I moved about three and a half hours away. Didn’t matter. Not one little bit. Tara was in my life and that was that. Soul friends don’t drift apart.

Back to School Eve

When you live in a small town, you best haul your behind to the store as soon as that school supply list is released. If you wait until the day before school starts (like some crazy mamas do), you’ll be standing in a ransacked Dollar General at nine o’clock at night, looking at a wasteland where crayons and markers once roamed free. You didn’t buy this crap last week when you were in the next town over. The next town over is where the streets are paved in pretty composition notebooks and pink highlighters…

Chicken Salad with Grapes and Pecans

I’m pretty picky when it comes to my chicken salad. I ask what’s in it before I order it at restaurants and you’ll never see me buying any of that premade crapola from a store. I’m always willing to try someone else’s recipe, but (not to go telling tales out of school) I like my chicken salad best. I have a secret ingredient that gives my recipe a little kick.  I betcha can’t guess what it is!

{I first published this recipe in 2013 on my old website. I had to bring it back on accounta I love it so!}

Blackberry Dump Cake

I generally don’t want to eat anything with the word “dump” in the name. That’s all kinds of gross and no. I’ll make an exception for this easy peasy cake featuring blackberries.

I love, love, love blackberries. The picking season brings back some of my happiest childhood memories. Although a wild blackberry bush grows at the very edge of my property, on the other side of the fence as you enter the woods, I purchase blackberries when they’re in season. That one bush doesn’t yield enough berries for the year.

Basil Pesto Hummus

My family calls hummus “bean dip.” Roasted red pepper hummus is red bean dip. Basil pesto hummus is green bean dip. I know. Bless. Whatever they call it, hummus is a favorite here. We snack on it with pita chips and make fantastic sandwiches and roll-ups. Spread some on top of grilled chicken and you’ve got yourself some yummlies.

I Wear What I Want- LuLaRoe!

I’m late to the party. As usual. LuLaRoe’s been around for a few years, but I assumed a plus size woman would find nothing her size from among their fabulous prints and cute styles. Well, I ignored the phenomenon that is LuLaRoe, categorizing it as a brand for people who are smaller and younger than me.

I was wrong.

Nikki Wehry, one of my readers who is a LuLaRoe representative, suggested I give the Carly dress a try. I liked the high-low hem, but I had my doubts. When I saw the size 3X online, it just didn’t look like it would fit. I thought the same thing when the dress arrived. Just no way. Wrong again! The dress is a 64% cotton/ 32% polyester/ 4% spandex blend. It’s some kind of magical combination that fits my size 26 body.

A Sugar Coated Suicide, Part Six: Accidents Happen

Trigger warning: suicide.

Johnny left to pick up Bailey and Mars at 3:30. I knew he’d probably stop by the band room while he was there, just to check on things. Gracie’s bus pulled up in front of the house fifteen minutes later. She ran up the hill with her backpack slipping off her arms, a crumpled piece of artwork in her hand, and a smile on that adorable face. I hugged her a little too hard, breathing in the faint smell of dirt and cookies. She leaned back and put her hand on my forehead.
