I’m working on my master bedroom this afternoon, pulling things to donate and sell, when I get a phone call from my mister. Our friend has died. I collapsed right there on the floor. This man, a band parent and local policeman, is such an incredible source of love and light. This man is such a radiant being, his death can’t possibly be real. I think of his beautiful wife and daughters for the next hour.
My friend, no matter where we were, got a hug every time we saw one another. He teased me, made me smile. This friend once stayed at my house for hours and hours (off duty, mind you) after an attempted break in, sitting with me until my mister got home. He made sure I knew how to protect myself after that happened as well, helped me feel safe in my home again. My friend never stopped hugging me, talking to me, loving me when it felt like our whole community turned against us last year. He was patient and kind about my mental illness, didn’t pretend it wasn’t there, or make it who I am.

I’d shoplifted just these two magical items from the TG&Y on accounta my need for makeup was stronger than my conscious. I didn’t have the balls to go for any mascara or eyeliner which seems like easier scores. My older sister told me to quit it before I got caught. Thank God, ‘cause I think between my inexperience with makeup application and that bumpy bus ride, I’d have been blinded myself…
