You Don’t Want to Get on the Naughty List

Writer: Beth Hallman | We all know adults who make jokes at the expense of others, who are masters of The Put Down. Honestly, I used to be one of those adults, such was my intense self-loathing. I lashed out with a bitin’, snarky wit I’d perfected over a lifetime of livin’ in a constant […]

Ancestry Dot OhMyGod

Guys, guys, guys!

So, I’m workin’ on my book today. I need to verify my Grandmom Amison’s birth year. Like, need need to do this. I can’t remember my own anniversary half the time, let alone the birth years of any of my grandparents, right? So, I’m Googling and nothing’s comin’ up. Remember how my sister and I recently reconnected? So, I message her, but she’s doesn’t respond immediately and I need need to know, ’cause I’m kinda crazy like that. It’s one tiny detail, but I have to know right then.

That’s when I jumped down the rabbit hole of that Ancestry website.

Go Play Outside

At any moment, during the summers of my youth, the call could come. Every child in my house better be ready for it. Mornin’s went like this. As fast as I could, I got dressed in clothes meant for gettin’ dirty and slammed back a bowl of cereal before my brothers drank all the milk. I might could get in 15 minutes of cartoons before the atmosphere grew so thick with tension, it spilled out of the open windows and muddied up our dirt yard. I waited for my mother’s shrill cry from somewhere deep inside bowels of our house. “GO PLAY OUTSIDE!”
We lived in a rural, Southern town. I didn’t have a golf cart, cell phone, or Pokemon Go. I just went. My hot spots were the creek, the drainage ditch across the street, and the thick woods beside our house, ominously called, “The Swamp.” I built forts everywhere. Most often, I played around the corner, near the foundation of a house that burned down a long time ago. The woods reclaimed more and more of it each year. This cracked square of concrete, dappled with sunlight, was pure magic.

I Wear What I Want- The Biltmore Edition

My soul sisters and I went to Asheville for our yearly Bow Chica Pow Wow. I gotta tell ya. I am in love with Asheville. Totally my kinda town. Plus, there’s the Biltmore Estate. I’ve wanted to tour that house for four forevers. One year, my mister gave me a bottle of Biltmore Reisling and a coffee table book for Christmas. Goin’ to the Biltmore didn’t quite fit our budget at the time. I’m thrilled I was able to experience it all with my soul sisters though!

Summer Fling

Writer: Beth Hallman | Twenty-four years ago, I’m havin’ this sweet, little summer fling. The sex is good. The dates are fun. He’s a cool guy. I’m thinkin’, as long as I don’t really get to know him, we’re good. In a couple of months, he can go on back to college in another state. No one will have hurt feelin’s…

Madness

I haven’t been able to sleep. I caught word of the horrific murders in Dallas after midnight. I watched videos and read about an attack on the police. Just like I watched videos of two young black men being murdered over the last three days. I didn’t want to watch, but I promised I’d never look away again. When reports of the fifth officer’s death came in around two o’clock, that was it for me. There would be no sleep in a world gone mad.

A peaceful protest ended in the murders of 5 police officers. My eyes burned, longing to close. I thought of the families who had just been devastated and were still awake, their eyes burning.
